What Causes Lightning?

Lightning is caused by the discharge of electricity in the atmosphere. Lightning is actually caused by an enormous electrical current. With constant changing weather conditions, water and ice are pushed into the atmosphere by warm air currents and then pushed back again by gravity. Over time, an electrical charge begins to build up in the clouds. The clouds now collect positive electrical charges at the top and negative electrical charges at the bottom.
